Police confirmed that an 88-year-old man succumbed to his injuries after a pickup truck broadsided the man’s vehicle on Greenback Lane Thursday afternoon. Westbound traffic on Greenback Lane near Sunrise Boulevard was shut down for about five hours to allow for a police investigation of the collision scene.
Police Sgt. Kristopher Frey said the elderly driver had initially been sent to the hospital with unknown injuries, following the collision. A police news release several hours later stated that the man had died in the hospital.
Frey said the collision was reported at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, with an investigation of the crash scene keeping traffic closed until about 5:30 p.m. He said due to the nature of the collision, extensive documentation and forensic work at the scene was necessary.
The sergeant said a preliminary investigation indicated that a two-door Acura was T-boned while attempting to cross westbound lanes of Greenback in order to turn left, while exiting the Citrus Town Center. The driver’s side door of the Acura appeared to have been directly hit in the crash.
Police said neither of the other two drivers involved were injured. A third vehicle involved had only minor damage, “if any,” according to Sgt. Frey.
The collision is still under investigation, but neither alcohol or speed appear to have been a factor in the collision, police said in the news release.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department at (916) 727‐5500.
