WB Greenback shut down after truck T-bones car; elderly driver hospitalized

Westbound traffic on Greenback Lane near Sunrise Boulevard was shut down for about five hours on Thursday afternoon to allow for a police investigation of a three-vehicle collision that sent an elderly driver to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Police Sgt. Kristopher Frey said the collision was reported at 12:40 p.m. Thursday, with an investigation of the crash scene keeping traffic closed until about 5:30 p.m. The sergeant said traffic unit officers were treating the incident as a “major collision” due to injuries involved being unknown.

The department’s traffic unit is only deployed for major collisions or fatalities and conducts extensive documentation and forensics at the scene, Frey said.

As of 3 p.m. Thursday, the sergeant said a preliminary investigation indicated that a two-door Acura was t-boned while attempting to cross westbound lanes of Greenback in order to turn left, while exiting the Citrus Town Center. The driver’s side door of the Acura appeared to have been directly hit in the crash, likely resulting in significant injuries to the driver.

Sgt. Frey said the injured driver was “in his eighties” and said neither of the other two drivers involved were injured. He said it did not appear alcohol or speed were a factor in the collision.
