Following heightened mosquito activity and the discovery of a species known to carry the Zika virus, a large area of Citrus Heights is being treated with ground spraying.
In a media release on Friday, the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District announced plans for ground spraying in the northern area of Citrus Heights on Saturday, Sept. 7, and Monday, Sept. 9. Spraying times are listed for 2-6 a.m. on both days.
The vector control district announced the detection of “Aedes aegypti” mosquitoes in Citrus Heights on Aug. 29, noting that the non-native species poses a “significant health threat because they can transmit deadly viruses, including Zika, dengue fever and chikungunya.”
Dr. Jayna Karpinski-Costa, who represents Citrus Heights on the vector control board, told The Sentinel in an email that the key to finding and controlling the invasive species is public awareness.
“These mosquitoes like to bite during the day,” she said. “The public needs to be on the alert and report day biters to the district.”
Residents experiencing daytime mosquito bites are asked to report the incident by calling (800) 429-1022 or by requesting service online at www.FIGHTtheBITE.net.
As a prevention measure, residents are advised to drain any standing water on their properties, which serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Mosquito repellent and long-sleeved clothing are also recommended for those going outside.
