Local Memorial Day ceremony draws crowd to honor the fallen
A crowd of about 200 veterans, local leaders, and community members gathered at Sylvan Cemetery on May 30 to remember those who lost their lives while serving in the armed forces. The annual Memorial Day event began with a march led by the flag-bearing Citrus Heights Police Department honor guard and concluded with a one-hour ceremony. Speakers included Mayor Jeannie Bruins, Police Chief Christopher Boyd and representatives from Sylvan Cemetery and American Legion Post 637.
CHPD: Two arrested in Memorial Day weekend DUI checkpoint
Two drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a publicized DUI checkpoint operation conducted by Citrus Heights police on May 28. Police reported a total of 856 vehicles were screened during the checkpoint, which was held on Auburn Boulevard near Twin Oaks Avenue. Two vehicles were towed and 19 citations for various violations were also issued.
Local fire captain retires after 22 years
A fire captain from Metro Fire Station 21 on Greenback Lane in Citrus Heights retired on May 26, after 22 years of service. Metro Fire announced the retirement of Captain Brad Dessert in a May 31 message on social media, offering “a big congratulations” and posting several photos of the captain engaged in rescue operations. The Department said Metro Fire and Station 21 “will not be the same” without Dessert.
Citrus Heights man, 20, arrested on child pornography charges
In a news release issued this week, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department announced the arrest of 20-year-old Jarek Weber of Citrus Heights, alleging he was found in possession of “thousands of images of child pornography.” The Department said many of the images were of children under age 12. Weber is being held in the Sacramento County Main Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. The Department said detectives are still trying to identify victims and locations where incidents may have occurred.
