The all-organic Sylvan Ranch Community Garden in Citrus Heights will host its 3rd annual plant sale during the first two weekends of April this year, with organizers inviting the public to pick up a plant or two to help support the nearly two-acre garden project.
Plants being grown and sold this year include beans, cucumbers, eggplant, melons, peppers, squash, pumpkins, tomatoes, and a wide variety of herbs and flowers, according to Debbie LeVon, a garden board member. She said prices will be $5 or less per plant, with combo discounts on groupings of three plants.
LeVon said the annual fundraiser is a good way to provide quality plant starts for gardeners in the community, with any plants left over to be grown in a special section of the garden to help provide donations of fresh fruits and vegetables to a local food closet.
The 2016 plant sale will be held on April 2-3 and April 9-10, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 7450 Stock Ranch Rd.
About the garden
Located at the corner of Sylvan and Stock Ranch Road, the once-vacant lot has been transformed into a thriving organic garden – thanks to the efforts of “enthusiastic gardeners” according to organizers.
The project began in 2009 with sponsorship from the City, and is required to be a self-sufficient garden that relies on membership fees and fundraisers to help maintain and improve the location each year. LeVon said Sunrise Marketplace became a sponsor this year
Gardeners can grow and harvest their vegetables in an assigned 4 x 20-foot plot for an annual membership fee of $60. The fee also includes permission for the member to harvest from all common areas and attend the garden’s educational seminars.
All proceeds from this year’s plant sale will go to benefit the garden, according to LeVon.
