Promising thousands of items priced “far under what they are really worth,” the Citrus Heights Community Marching Band is hosting its annual Spring Yard Sale fundraiser during the first two weekends in May.
“Our ‘yard sale’ has grown from what many would consider a BIG yard sale, to an event that could easily rival Denio’s Roseville,” Band Program Director Kathy Cook told The Sentinel in an email. “The event takes up a space the size of a football field, and has grown larger and larger every year!”
Beginning several years ago, organizers say item selection changes each year, with 2015 highlighting appliances and antique furniture – as well as a whole section of musical instruments.
Cook says the Band also had a large apartment complex recently donate items from evicted tenants and renovated units. Additionally, she said there have also been “quite a few” families donating belongings from parents who had moved into care facilities and “wanted to know that their belongings were going to a place they would be cared for and appreciated.”
When the volunteer marching band kicked off its first yard sale fundraiser back in 2011, Cook said the group had no idea how large the event would grow, and felt yard sale items from band members would dry up someday. To their surprise, the event has grown so large that Kathy and her husband Bill have given up raising cattle in order to dedicate storage space for the yard sale to continue to grow.

The all-volunteer marching band has become known for its performances at community events around the region, annually playing at the Citrus Heights Tree Lighting ceremony and organizing a flash-mob at Wal-Mart each December. Organizers say anyone age 12 and up is welcome to join the group, as long as they can read music.
The Spring Yard Sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 1-3 and May 8-10 at 7620 Linden Ave. in Citrus Heights. Proceeds from the sale go directly to support the band, helping provide for items like uniforms, instruments and liability insurance, according to Cook.
