Citrus Heights mayor shares update on city manager hiring process

Mayor Steve Miller comments on the city’s recruitment process for a city manager during a July 22, 2021 council meeting.

Citing an interest in transparency and concern about misinformation, Citrus Heights Mayor Steve Miller provided an update during Thursday’s council meeting about the city’s search for a new city manager.

Miller said former City Manager Chris Boyd formally notified the council of his decision to retire on April 12, followed by his official retirement on May 11. Two days later, on May 13, the council voted to hire him back on as interim city manager, for up to 12 months.

“We asked him to coordinate the hiring replacement on behalf of the council, given his experience and knowledge of the industry,” said Miller, noting a request for proposals was issued on May 28. While little has been said publicly by the city about the hiring process since the May 13 council meeting, Miller said a total of 15 proposals from various recruitment firms have been received, and the city has narrowed down the list to the top three.

“We’re currently in the process of finalizing a contract with the chosen search firms — and just a little early to say who that is until the paper is inked,” said Miller, adding that an announcement would be made “in the next couple of days.”

Moving forward, he said the process will involve council members developing a candidate profile, with the creation of a search flier, officially opening the position, and marketing.

“It is anticipated, if all goes well, that we can have a new city manager around the December-January time frame,” said Miller.

The city manager is the top appointed official in Citrus Heights, responsible for overseeing all operations in the city, including planning and drafting the city’s budget. The city manager also appoints the city’s police chief.
