The all-organic Sylvan Ranch Community Garden in Citrus Heights will host its 2018 annual plant sale on April 13-15, with organizers inviting the public to pick up a plant or two to help support the nearly two-acre garden project.
Gardener Naomi Hauge, who is helping put on the plant sale along with Debbie LeVon, told The Sentinel that well-over 100 organically grown vegetables, herbs and flowers will be available at the sale — including lots of tomato plants. Prices will range from $3-5 for plants, and raised bed and box kits will also be available for sale.
“We pretty much select things that we know will do well here in the valley climate,” said Hauge, commenting on the variety of plants. She also said anyone interested is also invited to drop by the garden to see an example of raised-bed gardening and have questions answered from experienced volunteers.
As in prior years, Hauge said any plants left over will be grown in a special section of the garden to help provide donations of fresh fruits and vegetables to the Sunrise Christian Food Ministry, based in Citrus Heights at Advent Lutheran Church.

The annual plant sale serves as the main fundraiser for the nonprofit garden, which was founded in 2009 at the corner of Sylvan and Stock Ranch roads, with sponsorship from the city. The garden is now required to be self-sufficient and relies on membership fees and fundraisers to help maintain and improve the location each year.
Gardeners can grow and harvest their vegetables in an assigned 4 x 20-foot plot for an annual membership fee of $60. Other membership levels are available at a lower cost and allow for harvesting from “common areas” and attending the garden’s educational seminars.
