The all-organic Sylvan Ranch Community Garden in Citrus Heights will host its 2017 annual plant sale on April 7-9, with organizers inviting the public to pick up a plant or two to help support the nearly two-acre garden project.
According to a press release from the Garden sent out this week, the plant sale will feature “hundreds of sustainably grown, organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers,” that were all grown from seed over the winter in an on-site greenhouse.
The annual plant sale is a fundraiser for the nonprofit garden, and also serves as a way “to provide quality plant starters for gardeners in the community, information on gardening, membership, and volunteer opportunities,” organizers said.
Volunteer members and expert gardeners are also scheduled to be at the garden to give tours and answer questions, and a flier for the plant sale invites visitors to learn about companion planting, raised-bed vegetable gardening, and water conservation.
As in prior years, any plants left over will be grown in a special section of the garden to help provide donations of fresh fruits and vegetables to a local food closet.
The 2017 plant sale will be held on April 7-9, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at 7450 Stock Ranch Rd. Sponsors of the event this year include Green Acres Nursery & Supply, HD Supply, the City of Citrus Heights, and Sunrise MarketPlace.
About the garden
Located at the corner of Sylvan and Stock Ranch Road, the once-vacant lot has been transformed into a thriving organic garden – thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteer gardeners.
The project began in 2009 with sponsorship from the city, and is required to be a self-sufficient garden that relies on membership fees and fundraisers to help maintain and improve the location each year.
Gardeners can grow and harvest their vegetables in an assigned 4 x 20-foot plot for an annual membership fee of $60. Other membership levels are available at a lower cost and allow for harvesting from “common areas” and attending the garden’s educational seminars.
