CHPD: man killed after vehicle hits utility pole on Greenback Lane

Police said a 62-year-old driver was killed Saturday morning after his vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole on Greenback Lane. The collision marks the third fatality on Citrus Heights roadways in 2017.

In a news release issued Saturday evening, Officer Anthony Boehle said police were dispatched to the 6200 block of Greenback Lane around 1:45 a.m. and found the vehicle had collided with the pole. The driver, the vehicle’s sole occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene by Metro Fire personnel.

“Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle driving at a high rate of speed eastbound on Greenback Lane and leaving the roadway when it failed to negotiate a left bend in the roadway,” Boehle said.

Police said the cause of Saturday’s fatal collision is under investigation, but “speed appears to have been a factor.” The investigation caused eastbound traffic on Greenback Lane to be closed for around four hours.

The driver has not been publicly identified, pending notification of next of kin by the coroner’s office. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the Citrus Heights Police Department’s traffic unit at (916) 727-5500.
