Construction-related issues have delayed the opening of a new “Crepes & Burgers” restaurant on Auburn Boulevard, but owners now say the new eatery will open by December of this year.
As previously reported on The Sentinel, 30-year-old Martin Garcia and his business partner Jose Garcia, no relation, are turning the old Charlie’s Cafe building at 7935 Auburn Blvd. into what they describe will be a cafe-style atmosphere with crepes, burgers, beer and more. Although originally targeting a grand opening by August, Martin said repeated cases of inadequate work done by his original contractor forced him to find another construction crew, which delayed progress.
Over the past few months, the 3,700-square-foot building has undergone significant renovation, with extensive demolition and remodel work performed inside, exterior siding replaced with stucco, and a new concrete patio poured outside. Indoors features a brand new kitchen, bathroom, and rock-style painted flooring.
“Basically we did a whole new building,” said Martin, who was on site this week doing some of the remaining construction work. “It needed a lot of work — whole new everything.”
Despite delays and significant expenses in getting the building ready for use, Martin said the effort has been worthwhile and city staff and inspectors “have been very helpful” in getting the business licensed and permitted. The chef said with major renovations now complete, he’s focusing on aesthetic aspects of the restaurant, including a fence around the front patio, new plants and landscaping, finalizing interior painting, and applying a final layer of red paint to the exterior.
Martin is hopeful the restaurant’s crepes will create a distinctive draw to the area, but the menu will also feature a wide variety of other foods such as lamb and turkey burgers, seven different salads, beer and wine, a full range of specialty coffee drinks, and a kids menu.
When open, Crepes & Burgers will employ a staff of about 20, with the Garcias serving as the primary chefs in the kitchen. The restaurant will tentatively operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
