For those looking for a new way to get their morning caffeine fix, plans are underway to bring a new coffee drive-thru to Citrus Heights at the corner of Sunrise Boulevard and Old Auburn Road.
Human Bean franchise owner Amie Wallace told The Sentinel via email last week she is hoping to open her new Citrus Heights location early next year. She said plans have been submitted to the City and are currently in the design review stage, with planning commission approval and building permits to follow.

The 32-year-old franchise owner opened her first Human Bean drive-thru in Rocklin last year, and also plans to expand to Woodland and elsewhere. She said the Citrus Heights pad was chosen for a variety of reasons, including a nearby donut shop located in the shopping center.
“We absolutely loved the location, because of its visibility and its ease of ingress and egress,” Wallace said of the Sunrise Boulevard location. “We also felt we could bring something just a bit different to the area and we’re hopeful it will become a regular stop for people who travel through that area.”
She said the proposed building is to be constructed on a grass pad next to Master Donuts in the SAFE Credit Union shopping center and “should have little to no effect on the existing parking.”
The Human Bean franchise in Rocklin, located just off Sunset Boulevard near Stanford Ranch Road, has earned an average rating of 4.5-out-of-5 stars from over 70 Yelp reviews. According to Wallace, the Citrus Heights location will be similarly sized, although it will only feature a single drive-thru with a speaker box and walk-up window, rather than a double drive-thru.
Popular drinks at her Rocklin location include “The Mexi,” a cinnamon spiced chocolate mocha, and the “snowy,” a white mocha. She said each drink also features an edible chocolate covered espresso bean on top.

The Oregon-based Human Bean company has 63 locations in nine states, most of which are franchise-owned. The company emphasizes its “Farm Friendly Direct” program, which seeks to ensure socially responsible sourcing of coffee beans that mutually benefits the grower as well as the buyer.
According to its website, Human Bean says farm-direct funds have helped humanitarian efforts in other countries, including the construction of a new schoolhouse in the Papua New Guinea community.
