Citrus Heights police said a car-jacking at gunpoint on Saturday led to a high-speed pursuit that ended with the suspect’s vehicle upside down after attempting a high-speed turn onto Auburn Boulevard at Sylvan Corners.
Police Lt. David Gutierrez said the car-jacking occurred in Roseville and ended in Citrus Heights after police located and attempted to stop the vehicle near Sunrise Boulevard and Antelope Road. He said the car took off after seeing marked police vehicles and crashed when it clipped a curb while turning onto Auburn Boulevard from Old Auburn Road at “probably 60 or 70 miles per hour.”
Bystander Liam Harder said he witnessed part of the accident, as well as the driver’s arrest.
“I ended up seeing the white car fly over the intersection,” said Harder, who heard a “crunch” and looked over to see the collision in progress. He said the vehicle flew up “at least 10 feet” in the air.
“There were cops everywhere,” said Harder. “It was nuts.”
Lt. Gutierrez said the driver involved was able to get out of the overturned vehicle and attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by a K-9 police dog. He said no bystanders were injured in the accident, but the driver was taken to the hospital “as a precaution.”
Police expect the intersection to re-open by 6 p.m.
