A large, football field-sized yard sale benefiting the Citrus Heights Community Marching Band will be held on May 6-8 and May 13-15 this year, with organizers promising a large selection of items at bargain prices.

The annual spring yard sale fundraiser is typically held during the first two weekends in May, but was delayed a week due to late rains not allowing volunteers to set items up in advance. The sale was initially scheduled to begin on April 29.

Items of note this year will include a “vast selection” of musical instruments — almost all in great playing condition, according to Band Director Kody Tickner. He also said the sale will feature several pieces of furniture that came to the band from old cruise ships, each of which will have its history listed on the item.

“As always, we will have a vast assortment of items that are priced far below what they are worth,” the band director said. Credit cards will also be accepted at the yard sale this year.

When the volunteer marching band kicked off its first yard sale fundraiser back in 2011, Band Program Director Kathy Cook said the group had no idea how large the event would grow and felt item donations from band members would dry up someday. To their surprise, the event has grown so large that Kathy and her husband Bill have given up raising cattle in order to dedicate storage space for the yard sale to continue to grow.

“Our ‘yard sale’ has grown from what many would consider a big yard sale, to an event that could easily rival Denio’s Roseville,” Cook previously told The Sentinel. “The event takes up a space the size of a football field, and has grown larger and larger every year.”

The all-volunteer marching band has become known for its performances at community events around the region, annually playing at the Citrus Heights Tree Lighting ceremony and organizing a flash-mob at Walmart each December. Organizers say anyone age 12 and up is welcome to join the group, as long as they can read music.

Proceeds from the sale go directly to support the band and help provide for items like uniforms, instruments and liability insurance, according to Cook.
