An early morning fire at a Citrus Heights office on Greenback Lane Monday was later ruled arson, according to Metro Fire officials.

The blaze occurred around 1 a.m. on the 7400 block of Greenback Lane, with firefighters containing the blaze to a single office space and approximately $35,000 in damages. Metro Fire initially tweeted via its official Twitter account that the incident appeared “suspicious,” followed by a Tweet several hours later declaring the fire to have been arson.

Photos released by Metro Fire appear to show fire damage to walls, dangling and burned ceiling portions, and a broken front window.

Nearby business owners said the office space was vacant, but was scheduled to have a tattoo parlor open up shop soon, according to a Fox40 news report. Owners of the office were unable to be reached by The Sentinel on Monday.

The fire is believed to have been the first arson of the year in Citrus Heights, with police recently reporting that arson had dropped by 25 percent in 2015. According to statistics released by the Citrus Heights Police Department last week, there were six arsons in 2015, compared to eight in 2014.
