Local events happening around Citrus Heights this week include a chili cook-off and car show, a city council meeting, and a football game between Mesa Verde and San Juan high school teams. Here’s what the week looks like:
TUESDAY, Oct. 6 —
Teen Writers Workshop. Another free workshop will be held at Sylvan Oaks Library, designed to help those aged 13-19 discover different writing styles and formats, with the assistance of a community college instructor. Workshops will be held each Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Sept. 8 through Nov. 24. The library is located at the corner of Auburn Boulevard and Van Maren Lane. (Registration link)
THURSDAY, Oct. 8 —
City Council meeting: Beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Citrus Heights Community Center, the council will hold a special study session for discussion and direction on the Mitchell Special Planning Area. A regular council meeting will follow at 7 p.m., where City leaders are set to officially recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Council will also hold a first reading for a proposed ordinance related to expediting the permit process for small residential rooftop solar systems and consider approving a $10,000 sponsorship to the Citrus Heights Chamber of Commerce.

FRIDAY, Oct. 9 —
High School Football Game: Two Citrus Heights high school teams will face eachother on Friday night, with Mesa Verde Mavericks and San Juan Spartans scheduled to play a 7 p.m. game at San Juan High School. (See Spartans 2015 schedule)
SATURDAY, Oct. 10 —
Free Kids “Build & Grow” Clinic: The Citrus Heights Lowe’s is inviting parents to bring their kids to a free event on Saturday where they’ll build a “spooky haunted birdhouse” and get a free apron and goggles. The activity will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is recommended for kids over age 5. (Registration link)
Chili Cook-Off: The 5th annual Chili Cook-Off and car show fundraiser will be held in the Citrus Heights Lowe’s parking lot near the corner of Greenback Lane and Sunrise Boulevard. The event is hosted by the GFCW Citrus Heights Women’s Club, which says profits will benefit Children’s Christmas for Domestic Violence Prevention Centers, according to an event flier. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. (See flier)
